Measuring Oil

A boy went to an oil shop to buy oil with two bottles. One bottle of 5lts and the other of 3lts. Unfortunately the shop keeper didn't have the measuring vessel. The boy wanted 4lts of oil. How can the 4lts be measured using the bottles in the hand of the boy ?

Solution : First fill the 5lts bottle and pour from it into the 3lts bottle. Now the 5lts bottle will have 2 lts oil remaining. Empty the 3lts bottle and  pour the 2lts oil into it.

Again fill the 5 lts bottle and pour from it into the 3lts bottle. As it already have 2lts, only 1ltr more will enter it leaving 4lts back in the 5lts bottle...

  3. It can be done the other way too!! Fill 3ltr bottle first. Pour it into the 5ltr bottle. So the 5ltr bottle has 3 ltrs in it, and the 3ltr bottle is now empty. Now fill the 3ltr bottle again. Start pouring it again into the 5ltr bottle until it gets full. The 5ltr bottle will fill 2 more ltrs and get full, leaving the 3ltr bottle with only 1 ltr oil. Now, empty the 5ltr bottle and pour the 1ltr oil into it from the 3-ltr bottle. So 5ltr bottle now has 1 ltrs. Fill the 3-ltr bottle until full and pour it into the 5-ltr bottle. The 5ltr bottle will now have 4 ltrs oil in it.

This is lengthier, but just wanted to indicate that it may be done this way too!!
