Aryabhatta

The most famous mathematician from India is Aryabhatta. He is popular all over the world for his most famous book called 'Aryabhateyam', which he had written when he was just twenty three.

Arybhatta was born in AD 476 in a place called 'ashmakam' a brahmin dominated village, which is now believed to be in the northern part of state of Kerala. Aryabhatta was fascinated to mathematics from the very young age itself. His thirst for knowledge had made him adventurous. He heard about the mathematical education center in the ancient place in India called Pataliputhra (Kusumapura). During his time there was no much transport convenience available and the education center was around two thousand miles from his place and to get there he had to pass through unknown places and unknown languages, which during his time no one would have ever dared. But his quest for knowledge was so strong that none of these challenges ever troubled him. He had dedicated his life to mathematics and he was happy even to lay his life for the quest of it.

Encouraged by the abundance of knowledge awaiting him Aryabhatta left his home place and travelled the whole way to Kusumapura. There he attained all the education available and also started research on his favourite subject. During his time by the age of twenty three a person achieving all this was unbelievable. By AD 499, he had completed 'Aryabhatteyam".

'Aryabhatteyam' was popular all over India during the time as manuscript and it was also translated to most of the languages then in India.
